Pitch a Story

Sponsored and editorial articles, reviewed for accuracy before publication.

Sponsored & editorial articles

The Shanghai Directory publishes long-form, fact-checked articles across visas, housing, education, business, and travel. We accept two kinds of contributions: editorial pitches we commission, and sponsored articles businesses underwrite. Our readers are Shanghai residents and visitors who need real information — not press releases.

Editorial standards

Every article — sponsored or not — is reviewed for accuracy before publication. We don't publish press releases, and sponsored articles are labeled as such. Our readers trust the directory because the writing holds up; we protect that. We check claims, verify statistics, and reject anything that doesn't survive a fact-check.

What works

Pitches that help a reader make a real decision in Shanghai: a guide to a visa category, a district comparison, a market-entry primer. Pitches that are purely promotional don't make it through review. The best articles answer a question someone is actually Googling at 2am.

How to pitch

Send a short outline: the working title, the question it answers, the sources you'd draw on, and your relationship to the topic. For sponsored articles, include the business you'd like featured and the angle. We respond to pitches within five business days.
